Organic geochemistry of recent marine sediments from the Nansha Sea, China

چکیده

Recent marine sediments from two cores, collected on the continental slope of the Nansha Sea, China, have been analyzed for organic matter content, n-alkane and isoprenoid hydrocarbons, fatty acids, n-alkanols and sterols. The organic carbon contents of the two sediment cores average 0.7 and 0.53%, respectively, and are higher than those of other sedimentary environments in this region. The distributions of various lipid compounds indicate that most of the sedimentary organic matter in the two cores is derived from marine plankton and bacteria, with land-derived organic matter present in relatively small amounts. The decrease in relative abundances of shorter chain lipids (n-alkanes, nfatty acids and n-alkanols) with depth is evident, as is the biochemical conversion of stenols to stanols in some samples. The low pristane/phytane ratios may result primarily from microbial activity, and re ̄ect the occurrence of signi®cant diagenetic alteration of organic matter in the two cores. # 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Origin and Nature of Green Clay Layers, Odp Leg 184, South China Sea

Green clay layers are reported from the Pliocene–Holocene intervals in five of the six sites drilled in the South China Sea (SCS) during Leg 184. Centimeter-scale discrete, discontinuous, and bioturbated layers, constituted by stiff and porous green clays, were observed, sometimes associated with iron sulfides and pyrite. Detailed mineralogical and geochemical analyses indicate that they differ...

20. Isotopic Chemistry of Organic Carbon in Sediments from Leg 184

Carbon isotopes were determined on the organic matter (OM) in sediments recovered from four sites (1143, 1144, 1146, and 1148) in the South China Sea during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 184. Concentrations of finely disseminated OM in the sediments were low (generally 0.1 to 0.5 wt%) and show organic δ13C isotope values (generally –22‰ to –24‰) indicative of marine to mixed marine and land-derive...

Geochemical and Environmental Survey of Elements in the Superficial deposits of Caspian Sea sediments: Application of Geoaccumulation Index, Enrichment, and Contamination Factors for Assessing Elemental Contaminations

Many elements such as Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Chromium (Cr), Lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn), and others are major environmental problems due to their toxic nature, nonbiodegradability and accumulative behaviors. There are anthropogenic or geogenic sources that accumulate or rotate elements in sediments. Sediments served as excellent indicator of metal pollution in coastal environments as...

Heavy metals in coastal sediments of South Caspian Sea: natural or anthropogenic source?

This paper focuses on heavy metal distribution patterns in sediments of central Guilan (CG) and east Mazandaran (EM) in the south Caspian Sea coasts, north of Iran. Sediment sub-samples were retrieved from core and surficial samples in different environments of marine and coastal lagoons as well as coastal outcrops. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and Atomic Emission Spectrometry (...
